In Costa Rica, this idyllic spot could have doubled up as the film set for The Beach with Leonardo DiCaprio. The lush jungle flows down into the turquoise water, offering a superb panorama over the Caribbean. The reef just to the right of the cove is excellent for snorkeling or surfing depending on sea state. When the swell has set in, a reef break perfect for intermediate level surfers breaks gently.

The unique feature of this paradise-like place is in its name: Pink Sands Beach is, quite simply, a pink sand beach. The color comes from the foraminifera, microscopic coral insects with pink shells that inhabit the reefs. When they die, the waves wash them ashore on the beach, which inherits a pinkish hue.

Among the beaches of Milos in Greece, Fyriplaka, east of Provatas on the south coast, is one of the most beautiful. This long strip of sand, bordered by cliffs and strewn with yellow, red or brown rocks, offers a fairytale show. Its waters are truly exotic: crystalline and shallow green-blue, a true haven to relax in.

The black sandy beach borders the Icelandic village of Vik, facing the cliffs of Mount Reynisfjall and was awarded the title of one of the 10 most beautiful beaches in the world in 1990. The black color of the sand comes from the volcanic rock of the subglacial Katla volcano, under the Mýrdalsjökull.
